5 Movies That Could Have Used a Heater

Cold weather can be a fickle friend, simply for the fact that she’s not your friend at all and does anything and everything to ruin your plans/freeze you in a cave/sabotage your chances at becoming the first Jamaican bobsled team. While cold weather and winter time add a cinematic quality of discomfort and hardships that we can all relate to, a few films come to mind where everything would have been alright with a space heater or electric blanket.

1) The Day After Tomorrow

An environmental ice age film through and through, The Day After Tomorrow is the grand daddy of all bad weather films. Giant sheets of snow and ice cover the cities and drown poor Lady Liberty, and while the environmentalists are on their high horse of I-told-you-sos, it’s hard to imagine how the situation could have gotten any worse. Even though this film depicts worldwide devastation and chaos due to global warming it’s safe to assume that a heater wouldn’t do much for Earth’s population as a whole, but for the main characters and other people who matter, it could have meant the world.

2) Snow Dogs

A family favorite about Ted Brooks, a dentist drowning in his own hubris somehow inherits a bunch of sled dogs. In order to keep the dogs, he has to leave his life of luxury in Miami, Florida and travel to a fictional town in a fictional state called Tolketna, Alaska. A major culture shock for the good doctor, he begrudgingly trains for a great sled race with his dogs. Through heartwarming miracles, the true meaning of friendship, and defying all odds, Tedd and his dogs finish the race. The movie goes smoothly without a hitch, however I would recommend at least a space heater for the pub scene; the fire looks a bit scanty.

3) The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

In a world where it is always winter and never Christmas must be miserable, but not as miserable as living in a mansion away from war-torn England in the hopes of surviving German occupation and making it out of 1940 alive. And in these hellish conditions of almost guaranteed safety, three siblings enter a wardrobe to start a war of their own. The White Witch seems to have no problem whatsoever with the cold (her dreadlocks keep her warm) but every other mystical creature is freezing. My solution of adding a heating system goes much further when applied to this situation, for instead of only being used to keep people warm, it would also be used to melt the White Witches castle and make it Spring again, but not before Christmas.

4) Balto

Set in 1925, Balto,  a sled dog, must race across the snowy frontier to deliver diphtheria serum to the sick children of Nome. While based on a true story, the movie contains elements that were not historically accurate. Balto was not half wolf and did not face prejudice from the other dogs. He did not have a girlfriend dog, nor did his life continue on to make two other films depicting the lives of Balto’s puppies. Balto was just a regular dog that defied the odds and saved the lives of many small children, by taking on the last part of the run to Nome. A heater wouldn’t have done much for the blinding snow, ice chunks hurtling from the sky and evil dogs trying to sabotage the cargo of serum, but it may have made the trip a little more bearable.

5) Titanic

A sappy love story set aboard the luxury liner RMS Titanic takes an emotional trip to the things that really matter the most. Rose and Jack are two people from opposite worlds who defy everything by falling in love and ignoring the difference in status. The movie goes the way of a simple romantic drama, but as we all know the Titanic hits an iceberg while everyone is partying. A few hours later, Rose is on a floating door of safety while Jack is slowly sinking into the cold depths below. Had there been a space heater present on Rose’s life door, it may have been enough to keep Jack alive long enough for Rose to blow the whistle, and they’d get to live happily ever after.
