The Space Needle is Seattle, Washington’s most recognizable landmark. This infrastructure dates back to 19 62and was built for the World’s Fair. The Space Needles stands at 605 feet tall and 138 feet wide. The tower also weighs in at a whopping 9,550 tons. Ever wonder what the vision was behind this unique piece of architecture? The leading ideas for the structure came from architect John Graham’s concept of a flying saucer and businessman Edward Carlson’s drawing of a balloon tied to the ground.

With a structure as tall and uniquely shaped, the affects of weather are definitely cause for concern. The Space Needle was built to withstand winds up to 200 mph; which for the year it was built (1962) was double the building code requirements. This tower was also built to survive earthquakes with a magnitude of 9 or below on the richter scale.

The Space Needle isn’t Seattle’s only large infrastructure; in-fact, it’s tied in fifth place for the largest building with the Safeco Plaza. Seattle’s tallest building is the Columbia Center, making it the 20th largest building in the United States and 84th tallest in the whole world. Seattle has 24 skyscrapers that stand at least 400 feet tall.
